Default Protection Mo/Me

hey all... i have been playing a Monk/Mesmer for the past 2 months and have been searching and searching for the perfect Staff.... i finally found a perfect Healing Prayer Staff yesterday... but instead of Healing Prayers... it's Protection

so... in the meantime while i search for a Healing Prayer staff... i think i ll make use of this new Protection staff... but then i wonder... can a Mo/Me really be an effecient protector? almost every protection monk i see is e/mo ... because monk primary isn't really needed if i'm gonna be using protection skills right? cause' divine favour would be of more use to a healing monk then a protection monk...?

so i'm just wonderin... should i just sell the staff... and move on... or can i be a good protector ... and if so can u recommend a skill layout plz?

thx in advance

Actually Divine Favor is extremely useful to a Protection Monk because of two skills: Divine Boon and Blessed Signet. Additionally both Spell Breaker and Peace and Harmony are tied to Divine Favor, and both of these can be very helpful to someone whose job it is to protect the party.

Several really great Protection skills are maintained enchantments (Life Bond, Life Barrier, Protective Bond.) Blessed Signet gives you energy for each enchantment you are maintaining. With high Divine Favor one use of Blessed Signet can give you a massive energy boost if you are maintaining a lot of Enchantments. With Blessed Signet I can keep my entire party Life Barriered indefinitely and throw out the occasional Aegis or Reversal of Fortune as well.

If you pump Divine Favor, Divine Boon allows you to pinch hit as a healer when necessary by spamming spells like Reversal of Fortune and Guardian. With the additional healing offered both by the built in Divine Favor healing boost and the additional healing that Divine Boon tacks on you can have over 100 points of healing added onto the regular effect of Reversal of Fortune or Guardian. I find this is extremely helpful in situations where mass disenchants are going on that prevent using the Enchant/Blessed Signet strategy. Throw up Boon and start healing. If it gets dispelled, pop it up again and keep plugging.

If you're going the Blessed Signet route for keeping up an obscene number of enchantments, I'd recommend also running Mantra of Inscriptions to really push up its recycle time. You'll be very, very busy casting Blessed Signet all the time (and possibly Signet of Devotion, which synergises with the build very well), but you'll never run out of mana, even with 12 or more permenant enchants and the occasional Aegis or what have you.

I am a Smite/Protection monk. With Divine Favor and Divine Boon I get 99 heal point everytim I cast a spell on bad guys. I don't need healing prayers.

The purpose of a Monk is to keep the group alive. There are 3 ways to do that:

1. Smite weakens the enemy and makes them easier to kill
2. Protection reduces the amount of damaghe taken
3. Healing patches the team up once they have begun to die

Yeah, I'm also interested in prot. monk builds other people use. I myself usually carry life barrier and blessed signet, along with shielding hands, RoF and maybe ward against melee. Then of course aegis and 2 other empty slots that Im not always sure how to fill.

yea... excpet that monks can heal and protect 10x better than they can smite. Honestly, look at their damage output compared to almost anyone else. You should have plenty of non-monks in your party that can dish out way more than you... your damage wont be missed if you go pure defense.

Well, protective bond is a huge waste of energy, and when you're maintaining lots of enchantments it's the one thing you don't want. I'd much rather take protective spirit, as it has a lot of uses against the FoTM air spike builds.

I usually prefer to bring mend condition along, since conditions are so common, and with 16 in protection and ~10 in divine favor, mend heals for 100+ health and is spammable. I'm not sure how cost-effective guardian is, I'm ele secondary and find it more useful to bring along ward against melee. I try to alternate between ward vs melee and aegis, for maximal coverage.

Bring Vital Blessing to increase tank health points. Don't be afraid of enchanments. If you know hoe to use the right they can really help.
